DUB'S QUICK AND DIRTY STEP BY STEP

Here is a quick step by step on how I put togeter an illustration.

1. Prep the board. You can use gesso or if you really like to save a few bucks Killz from your local Home Depot (its the stuff you put on your walls before you paint in your home). Then cover the board with a color.

2. Draw the image. Usually I do this with a brown color pencil.

3. Start adding value. This can be done with color pencil or acrylic.

4. Use acrylic to build up the image and to change the color of the background. I find it easier to cover the board in the color of the main image then change the colors around it. One cool thing is that the background color will bleed a bit through and give your image color unity.

5. Fix stuff. In this image I realized that the dude looked like an old Fat Albert so I changed the color of his shirt.

6. Add more details and finishing touches.

This image was painted a while ago with craft paint and I used color pencils to add highlights.
Now I could go back and seal the painting with crystal clear and oil glaze over it to bump up the vibrancy of the colors and give it a more polished look.
